Frequently asked questions about the PED
What is the PED?
The Pressure Equipment Directive (2014/68/EU) governs the design, manufacture and conformity assessment of pressure equipment with a maximum allowable pressure PS greater than 0.5 bar: vessels, piping, steam generators, safety accessories and pressure accessories.
How is the PED risk category determined?
You identify the Annex II table based on equipment type, fluid state (gas or liquid) and fluid group; the category, from I to IV, depends on PS, the volume V or the DN, and their product PS·V or PS·DN.
What does Article 4(3) mean?
Equipment below the Annex II thresholds does not receive a category CE marking: it must nevertheless be designed and manufactured in accordance with the sound engineering practice of a Member State, with adequate instructions for use.
What is the difference between fluid group 1 and group 2?
Group 1 covers hazardous fluids (explosive, flammable, toxic or oxidising under the CLP Regulation), such as LPG, hydrogen or ammonia. Group 2 covers all other fluids, including air, nitrogen and steam.
What about equipment operated in Italy?
Italy has additional user obligations under Ministerial Decree 329/04: a declaration of putting into service through INAIL’s CIVA portal and periodic statutory inspections. The calculator flags whether your equipment is likely to be affected.
Is the calculator result binding?
No: it is technical guidance. The final classification and module selection remain the responsibility of the manufacturer or user, supported by a qualified professional and, for higher categories, by the notified body.
